Mastering Genealogical Proof

In the preface of his book Mastering Genealogical Proof, Thomas W. Jones writes "I wrote this book to help other genealogists understand in a reasonable time frame what decades of trial-and-error experiences have taught me. I hope the text and exercises will save them from the embarrassing blunders and misconceptions I have experienced. I hope it will enable many more family historians to advance their genealogical research goals efficiently and accurately. All of us should be able to reconstruct confidently, and portray accurately, the lives and relationships of people we cannot see."

In this book, Dr. Jones guides the reader through the five elements of the Genealogical Proof Standard (GPS):
  1. Reasonably exhaustive research has been conducted.
  2. Each statement of fact has a complete and accurate source citation.
  3. The evidence is reliable and has been skillfully correlated and interpreted.
  4. Any contradictory evidence has been resolved.
  5. The conclusion has been soundly reasoned and coherently written.
Each Gen Proof Study Group has a mentor who leads participants through the exercises and discussions outlined in the book. If you are interested in joining a future group, please email us at
